The Importance of Letting Preschoolers Walk, Fall, and Try Again

September 24, 2025

Every day, we see parents who want to help. We see preschoolers carried from cars to classroom doors, parents who help tie their shoes, zip their jackets, and feed them to avoid messes. But sometimes, the best way to help is to let go—just a little.

At Sing In Chinese Preschool, we believe that small daily challenges build big emotional strength. Learning to walk without being carried, to pick themselves up after a fall, or to put on their own shoes teaches children independence and resilience. These moments develop not just motor skills, but also confidence and a sense of agency.

Of course, we provide structure and safety. But we also give children the space to try, fail, and try again. That’s where real learning happens. When a child learns to carry their backpack or solve a small problem on their own, they’re not just getting stronger—they’re becoming more capable and self-aware.

So next time you’re tempted to step in, take a breath. Let your child walk, fall, and try again. It’s one of the best gifts you can give.
